Student Welfare
The academy has a range of policies and procedures in place that ensure the welfare of all of our students. Several of these policies set out expectations about good behaviour.
This means everyone feels safe and can learn, this includes good learning behaviour around the academy and in lessons and also rules about how you communicate and behave appropriately towards other students and staff.

Attendance
The expectation is that students attend every day unless they are unwell, in which case parents or carers are expected to contact the Academy before 9am on each morning of absence.

If you send any medication into the Academy, Form 5 (Parental agreement for Academy to administer medication) must be completed.

Female Genital Mutilation
Read a report of the visit by Dr Comfort Momoh MBE to Harris Girls’ Academy to talk to our students about female genital mutilation (FGM).
Dr Momoh is a midwife who specialises in the study and treatment of FGM. She works at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust where she runs the African Well Women’s Clinic, dedicated to caring for women affected by FGM. She received her MBE from the Queen for services to women’s health. Read more.
Bullying
Bullying will not be tolerated from any member of our academy community, either inside or outside the academy. The seriousness of bullying cannot be emphasised enough and is one of the top concerns parents have about their children’s safety. That’s why we have strong procedures in place to deal with any incident that occurs, including our that any student can use if they are worried about bullying. We also do regular surveys of students to investigate perceptions of bullying across the academy and include anti-bullying work in our PSHE programme, coaching and in assemblies. Student and parent surveys
We regularly use surveys to seek students' and parents' views about their experiences at our academy, and our plans to move the academy forward.
Student questionnaires
These are done twice yearly. When there are negative comments, Heads of Year and Assistant Principals meet with those students and use them as a focus group to pick up on issues and views and then address any issues that are found to be valid for students. This is a very powerful way of us hearing student views and it shows students that we are serious about engaging with them and acting upon their requests.
Curriculum and activity surveys
We ask students each year which learning experiences they have had have had the most impact for them so that we can reflect on what engages students most and offer more of those opportunities. We also ask students whether there are things they would like to have the chance to do that they don’t currently have and seek to implement these wherever possible.
