Glittering awards evening celebrates outstanding students
The achievements of 53 students at 暗网AV were celebrated last night at our 2013 Awards Evening in a packed school hall. The annual event, one of the highlights of the school year, was attended by students, teachers, parents, carers and governors.
As well as prizes for every subject area, from Geography to Art, Music to Maths, the academy also made a number of special awards to students who had made an outstanding contribution across many aspects of school life. See below for a complete list of winners.
Outstanding achievement
The Harris Family Award for Outstanding Achievement, for example, went to Elisabeth of Year 11 for her dedication, aptitude and enthusiasm across all subjects.
“Elisabeth never considers doing the minimum but always aims for A* and works with teachers to achieve the best she can,” said Principal Jane Fletcher announcing the award. “Elisabeth has shown unmatched dedication, aptitude and enthusiasm for all subjects. She hopes to study Geography or Science at either Oxford or Cambridge and I am sure she will.”

Elisabeth (pictured left with Jane Fletcher and David Lomas, Chair of Governors) said: “I feel delighted to get an award but also humbled to be chosen from amongst all the other people in the room this evening.”
Subject award winners included Veronica of Year 9 for her “staggeringly good work in English that shows a depth of understanding beyond her age,” said Head of English, Chris Brown.
The Key Stage 4 award for Science went to Muna of Year 11 who is “on target to achieve an A* and writes with depth and insight and can make a logical and very persuasive argument,” said Head of Science, Stephen Ford.
Proud parents
As well as the presentations, guests enjoyed fruit cocktails before the event and tasty food in the interval, during which they were entertained by magicians, a stilt walker and even a professional pick pocket.
Parents understandably enjoyed seeing their children honoured. “I was very proud when her named was called out,” said Mr Delridge Dawson, whose daughter won the Key Stage 5 award for Maths. “I have great faith in this school and know she will do well.”
Shafiyyah of Year 10 said she was both “nervous and happy” about going up to receive her Key Stage 4 award for Music. “It was really good to get the award and makes me want to work even harder,” she said.
The ceremony brought laughs too, such as when Mr Richard Newton, Head of Sociology, revealed that in the run-up to her exams Mamuse (Valerie) had emailed him nearly ten Sociology revision essays in one weekend, for marking.
“The awards are a great way to recognise the achievement of individual students and give them an opportunity to see the appreciation of their teachers, governors and everyone at the school,” said David Lomas, Chair of Governors.
“This event celebrates the success of individual students and is our opportunity to congratulate them on what they have achieved,” said Principal Jane Fletcher. “We are immensely proud of every single one of them, as they grow into well-rounded, polite, confident young people able to function capably in a wide range of situations and learn about what they can both get from the world, and give to it too.”

Major awards
Harris Family Award for Outstanding Achievement - Elisabeth
Elisabeth has shown unmatched dedication, aptitude and enthusiasm for all subjects and for Geography in particular. Her success is down to her unique approach: Elisabeth never gets flustered, she tackles each task as it is presented to her, she doesn’t even consider doing the minimum but always aims for A*.
Principal’s Award for Excellence – Anh
Anh is on track for some very high grades across the board when she finishes year 11. She works well across all subject areas and is the model pupil. She is an excellent active learner.
Principal’s Award for Excellence – Cherrin
Cherrin has excellent concentration in class and can take methodology and apply it quickly and effectively. She is an incredibly diligent student and truly worthy of this award.
Governors' Award for Creative Writing - Sajidah
Sajidah is a continuous source of illuminating ideas, warm and supportive towards her peers. Her capacity to respond critically yet creatively, professionally as well as personally to the issues and ideas that shape our world is truly a gift of limitless potential.
Governors' Award for Conduct - Hollie
Hollie is such a positive, friendly and optimistic student to teach. She is dedicated and gives each task her all. She always takes on feedback good-naturedly and works hard to balance the demands of her subjects. She is one of the best role models in the Academy.
Governors' Award for Sporting Achievement – Leanna
Leanna is good at many sports. Since joining the Harris Bulldogs Handball Team, for example, she has been an instrumental attacking player, always encouraging, supporting and offering advice to fellow players.
