NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters finals

To marks the 25th anniversary of the formation of the International Paralympic Committee, we took a group of Year 9 GCSE Physical Education students to the Lee Valley Tennis Centre at the Olympic Park to watch the Wheelchair Tennis Masters.

The day hosted some of the world's top players who have returned to London for the first time since the 2012 Paralympic Games.

On arrival, the girls took part in a variety of interactive virtual tennis games led by Lawn Tennis Association coaches alongside 8 other London based primary and secondary schools.

Our designated centre volunteer gave us a tour outside of the Hockey AstroTurf pitch used during the Olympics. Afterwards the group was led into the indoor arena to watch two different Wheelchair Tennis matches. The first was J. Griffioen from Holland playing K. Montjane from South Africa. We then cheered on the British champion Jordanne Whiley who was playing Sharon Walraven from Holland.

The students learnt about the Paralympic rules and how they compete at a world class level. The day’s experience links to their GCSE curriculum on Paralympic sport. Watching the finals broadened their knowledge and strengthened their awareness of the struggles that Paralympic athletes face when competing at elite level.
