Children's hospital party helpers

Year 12 and 13 Health and Social Care students turned out in force to help out at the Christmas party for the , which took place at Millwall Football Club last Sunday.

The party is an annual treat for children who have been treated at the Evelina Children's Hospital during the year, and this is the third year in a row we've been involved.

Students ran several very popular stalls including face painting, cake decoration, a Christmas art gallery, photo booth and organised schedules for the ice skating. Patients and family members were also encouraged to share their thoughts and memories on heart shaped cards which were placed on a memory tree.

"Fantastic job"

Teacher Carina Storm said: "The students did a fantastic job at taking charge of the activities.

"They have all enjoyed it and got so much out of it. They were barely able to take breaks as the children loved the activities and there was a constant flow of little ones to entertain.

"The students represented HGAED brilliantly. I couldn’t be more proud of them all. They were the last ones of the volunteers to leave the site – so I’m also impressed by their perseverance. We all really enjoyed the day – so worthwhile!"

The Evelina Children's Heart Organisation is one of the local charities we support through our .

What students said

"Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces as they walked in and hearing their giggles of excitement was a rewarding sight especially knowing that my help and contribution over the last few weeks had helped to put the smiles on their faces."
Sophie (Year 13)

"Getting involved with ECHO was a great experience and I really enjoyed it."
Zaime (Year 13)

"I feel inspired by the experience I’ve had volunteering for ECHO and hope there are more events like this coming up soon as I would love to take part in it."

Fahmida (Year 12)

"I enjoyed supporting the children during this activity very much.  It has given me a sense of what it would be like to work with children in the future as it presented me with the joys and challenges that goes along with arranging and organising activities for children."
Fatmata (Year 12)

ECHO Christmas party 2014 (3)

"Helping at the ECHO event was a life time experience and I will never forget it. I am looking forward to be a part of it again."
Krisan (Year 12)

"I enjoyed everything about the event even though it was hard work. I will never forget this event as it was the first event that gave me the chance to really help people.  I am ready for another ECHO Christmas party or any other charity event that needs volunteers."

"I enjoyed this experience and would recommend it to others who are currently studying Health and Social Care. It is a very rewarding experience as we were given the chance to deliver our ideas in real life as well as working in a team to ensure the children were enjoying themselves." Sherry (Year 13)

"What I enjoyed the most was seeing children smiling and having fun."
Mary (Year 13)

"Children would approach me with many different ideas of what they wanted for face painting and I tried my best to do what they wished. It was a very rewarding experience; I loved every minute of it."
Jesse (Year 13)

"The experience I got from the ECHO party was amazing, even though the children might have had a challenging year they still had a positive energy and a smile on their faces. That was heart-warming to see."
Maisie (Year 12)

We were delighted to receive the following 'thank you' card praising our students for their contribution
