'Give it a Try' Rugby Festival 2015

The ‘Give it a try’ Schools Rugby festival took place on Wednesday 29th April and 11 of our enthusiastic Year 9 and 10 students took part in the day. Despite the atrocious wet weather conditions, the students were determined to enjoy the fun-filled day of rugby.

The festival was held at the Old Alleynians Club, Dulwich Common, and the games were played in line with the current RFU guidelines. There was a round robin series of matches taking place in the afternoon including Year 7 and 8 boys, Under 13 girls and Under 15 girls from six local schools.

Coaches

The afternoon was managed by ‘Give it a try’ coaches, Alleynian Youth Rugby volunteer coaches and Alleynian Junior Rugby academy players.

Our team competed in the Under 15s with three other schools and our first match was against St Martin in the Fields. Their line-up was strong and despite our solid efforts we lost the first game 5-1. The second match we played against Kingsdale Foundation School ended in a close draw. The final match saw The Charter School win 6-3.

Skills

The girls played extremely well as a team and used the skills learnt from their weekly rugby club sessions with Coach Spike Kenny, who organised this event.

The day was all about the taking part, not the winning. The students were judged on the five following ‘core values’ across each match – teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

Core values

The coaches and referees voted for the student in each age group who showed the most core values throughout the games. The winner for the Under 15s group was from our school - Esther. Huge congratulations to her for this fantastic achievement. As a team the girls played to a very high standard of rugby and put together their individual strengths for an all team effort.

Towards the end of the day the results were announced and the sun started to shine just as the big BBQ was lit! Well done and thank you to the following students for taking part and representing the academy: Esther, Caitlyn, Blessing, Tracy , Catherine, Mistura, Cristina, Ayisat, Courtney, Alexandra and Oluwasemilore.
