ID Gallery Creates New Art Space
The first show in our new ID Gallery opens on 14 January 2016 – a solo exhibition by sculptor Jackie Brown, who uses natural materials to explore the relationship between the domestic interior and the natural world.
ID Gallery is a new gallery space in the school where artists will be invited to exhibit their work, as well as lead talks and discussions with students.
"It's called ID Gallery because students focus on identity in their coursework and because as young people they are exploring their own identities," says Jose Campos, Teacher of Art.
The gallery consists of two spaces - a studio space in one of our art classrooms and also a more public gallery in one of our corridors.
Artists will exhibit their work in each of the two spaces.
"Having the gallery at the school is an opportunity for students to a access contemporary gallery spaces and learn from practicing artists," says Jose. “It will bridge the gap between art education and the wider world and help students understand their own evolving identities within the complexities of contemporary culture."
About the gallery
ID Gallery consists of two spaces.
The Lower Gallery is in a school corridor and offers artists the opportunity to exhibit their work, create installations or performance pieces, in a more public arena. Its situation offers an interesting alternative to the white cube, traditional art gallery space. This space is more inclusive and would allow access to a larger audience.
The Upper Gallery is a studio room attached to one of our art classrooms and lends itself to three dimensional works and pieces of art work that need to be secure. It is a white cube space, and offers a traditional interaction with art work.
Jackie Brown’s exhibition at ID Gallery continues until 24 March 2016.
