Awele, Year 10, is Best New Police Cadet

We are so proud of Awele, Year 10, who has been chosen as Best New Cadet by Southwark Volunteer Police Cadets.

Awele joined the Police Cadets two years ago and enjoys taking part in activities including volunteering, engaging with the community, weapon sweeps, leaflet drops and community events.

“My sister was a police cadet, which is what encouraged me to join, but I find it very personally satisfying,” says Awele.

Awele received her award in recognition of work as a cadet and also supporting her family during lockdown. “Both my parents are key workers so I had to be responsible for looking after my brother, who is autistic.”

“I was delighted to get the award, it’s a big achievement for me,” she added.

"Turned it around"

Things were not always going so well for Awele. “I know Awele wouldn’t mind me saying that in Years 7 and 8 her behaviour was not so good and it was touch and go for a while,” says Ms Mehmet, Awele’s Head of House.

“But Awele has turned it around and joining the Police Cadets has definitely been a big part of that. I can’t fault her behaviour now.”

Despite her success, Awele does not have ambitions to be a police officer but wants to carry on being a cadet until she is 18. She even recently took part in an online session which saw her asking questions of the government’s policing minister Kit Malthouse.

We are so proud of her,” says Ms Mehmet. “Awele is very humble about her achievements and takes it all in her stride.”

Well done, Awele!
